Young People at the Emergency Department

Identification and Management of Children and Young People at the Emergency Department (ED)

Why Are We Doing A Study About Young People's Visits to the ED?
A hospital Emergency Department (ED) is one of the services that can be used by a young person when they are in need of emergency support, usually health care. Visits to the ED can be a result of an accident or the actions of another person, or can result from the actions of the young person themselves. In New Zealand we do not have complete or reliable information about why young people visit the ED, what services they receive, and what happens to them after they leave the ED. To find out more about these questions we have been conducting a review of the records that ED keeps, and will enrich this data with surveys. We hope that having this information will help us to provide better ED services for young people in the future.

Record Review
Our review of non-identifiable data is already underway. This involves auditing data routinely collected by ED at Waikato Hospital so that we have an idea about who visits ED, why they visit, and what happens to them when they are there.

The ED Survey
We are asking young people in the age group 16 - 24 years, who have visited ED during a specific time period, to complete our ED survey. The survey asks for some demographic information (age, gender and ethnicity), some information about their last visit to the ED, the services they received and how happy they were with these services, and some information about follow-up treatments and referrals and their effectiveness. This information is a little more detailed that we can obtain from the audit of records.

This project has been reviewed and approved by the Northern-Y Regional Ethics Committee (NTY/10/EXP/086).

We will be posting a summary of our findings as soon as the project has been completed.

If you have any questions or concerns about this project you can speak to one of the research team at The Psychology Centre (John Fitzgerald or Karma Galyer on 07 846 6907).
