Psychosocial Risk Identification in Primary Care

Research

A Survey of Psychosocial Risk Identification, Assessment and Management in Primary Care.

John Fitzgerald, Karma Galyer & Deb Christini-Crawford

This project is supported by a Summer Studentship Grant from Waikato Clinical School, University of Auckland.

Timeline: November 2009 - February 2010.

This study aims to survey and interview primary care practitioners (GPs and Practice Nurses) to gain a rich understanding of the magnitude of psychosocial risks these health professionals are required to identify, assess and manage in their day to day practice, with a particular focus on how suicide risk is recognized and responded to.

November 2009

  • A questionnaire will be posted to all GPs and Practice Nurses within the Waikato region. A link will also be provided to all practitioners to fill out the survey online.

December 2009

  • A three week reminder/follow-up will be sent to all practitioners who received the first mailing.

January 2010

  • Collation and analysis of data - Primarily themes from qualitative responses will be reported. Basic descriptive statistics of the responses will be completed using demographic data.
  • A representative group of respondents who have indicated a willingness to engage in a follow-up interview will be contacted with aim to get more detailed information about practitioner experiences with patients at risk. Interviews will follow a semi-structured format that mirrors the content of the survey form.
  • A qualitative analysis will be undertaken of the interview data to identify significant themes in the practitioners experiences.

February 2010

  • Dissemination of results. A summary will be made available on this website.
  • We will seek to have findings published in publications read by General Practitioners, such as Outreach and The Journal of Primary Health Care, New Zealand Family Practice or the New Zealand Medical Journal.
  • Presentation of the results at relevant conferences or meetings, including feeding back a summary of results to the practices involved in the research.
