Sexual abuse and mental injury: Developing practice guidelines.

The Psychology Centre was sub-contracted by Massey University to investigate outcome measurement for mental injury resulting from sexual abuse.This project was part of a larger research programme which was being conducted by The Psychology Clinic at Massey University, in Palmerston North, to investigate the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes for mental injury resulting from sexual abuse.The Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) has funded the research programme.The research project involves a large team of researchers as well as an Advisory Committee representing clinicians, service providers, and tangata whenua.
Three reports were generated by our team, which are among the 15 technical reports generated by the project as a whole.
A summary of the main findings from the report by Ryan, Hodgetts, Fitzgerald, et al. (2006) iwere presented at the 2007 annual conference of the New Zealand Psychological Society held in Hamilton, NZ.
The final guidelines were published by the Accident Compensation Corporation in March 2008 under the title, Sexual Abuse and Mental Injury: Practice Guidelines for Aotearoa New Zealand.
